Seminar 11:
On The Road Again – Field Trip Training for Camp
and School Staff
Session length: 2 hours
Designed for: Administrators, faculty, camp program
staff
Field trips, class outings, athletic events, overnights, off-site special
activities often involve transporting our students and campers.
However, one of the greatest risks we face in the operation of our camp
and school programs lies in the area of transportation of participants,
as we are exposed to the serious injury or loss of life of a large number
of participants at one time. In addition, we are operating in an
open environment without many of the controls and protections we have
on our own sites. What training has your staff received for dealing
with emergencies away from your on-site resources?

This workshop includes: pre-trip planning and preparation; safety
rules for trip participants on off-site trips; communication plans for
staff when off-site; permission slips, waivers, and releases for trip
participants; supervision guidelines and procedures for trips; pre-trip
and day of trip orientation guidelines for trip participants; emergency
action plan for dealing with emergencies off-site; checklists for trip
leaders.
Key Concepts:
- Overview of federal and state regulations
- Communication plans to base site and community resources
- Permission slips and releases
- Supervision practices for off-site excursions
