Seminar 5:
Safety Training, Handling Emergencies and Risk Management
for Coaches and Athletic Staff Members
Session length: 2 hours
Designed for: Athletic directors, coaches, trainers and other athletic
staff members
What training have you provided for your coaches and other athletic staff
members? Do they know what to do at an away game, should a serious injury
or disaster situation occur? What resources do they have available?
Is there an emergency action plan in place? How do they communicate with
the school administration, and who do they call after regular school hours?

This workshop includes: communication plans; emergency and medical
supplies needed; transportation considerations; releases and waivers for
participants; protecting staff from sexual abuse allegations; identifying
constituents to be dealt with in an emergency; assessing the safety of
facilities and media communication policies. The workshop uses
a hands-on approach with participants brainstorming issues to be dealt
with in a scenario that occurs at an away-game outside of regular school
hours.
Key Concepts:
- Clarifies the need to plan ahead for injuries and other emergencies
that might occur, particularly away from your home site
- Helps staff identify resources that can be utilized when regular support
is not available
- Staff is involved in constructing the action plan to be utilized for
your site, resulting in an action plan that is custom to your situation.
